The 2026 NBA Finals may have found their defining moment.
For nearly three quarters, the San Antonio Spurs looked destined to even the series and regain momentum heading into the final stretch of the championship battle. Instead, Madison Square Garden witnessed one of the most extraordinary turnarounds in NBA history as the New York Knicks erased a massive deficit and secured a dramatic victory that pushed them to within one win of their first title in more than five decades.
Trailing by 27 points at halftime and still down by 20 midway through the fourth quarter, New York appeared finished. What followed was a comeback that will be remembered alongside the greatest moments the Finals have ever produced.
Knicks Rewrite NBA Finals History with Stunning Fourth-Quarter Rally
The Spurs were nearly flawless during the opening half.
San Antonio carved up New York’s defense from the perimeter, knocking down an astonishing 14 three-pointers before halftime and establishing a Finals record for long-range makes in a half. Their offensive execution was crisp, their ball movement relentless, and their defense suffocating.
Victor Wembanyama controlled the game early, exploiting Karl-Anthony Towns after the Knicks star picked up two quick fouls in the opening minutes. The French phenom scored efficiently, dominated the glass, and helped the Spurs build what seemed like an insurmountable lead.
By the end of the first quarter, San Antonio had already opened a 19-point advantage. The visitors shot nearly 66 percent from the field, committed no turnovers, and looked every bit like a championship team ready to silence the Garden crowd.
Even when New York briefly threatened in the third quarter, the Spurs appeared to have an answer. A Wembanyama basket with 9:33 remaining restored a 20-point cushion, seemingly placing the series back on level terms.
Instead, that moment marked the beginning of San Antonio’s collapse.
The Knicks suddenly rediscovered their defensive intensity, forcing difficult possessions and turning stops into transition opportunities. The energy inside Madison Square Garden transformed completely as New York pieced together an incredible 32-11 run over the final nine and a half minutes.
What had felt impossible slowly became inevitable.
OG Anunoby and Jalen Brunson Deliver When New York Needed Them Most
While the comeback was a collective effort, two players stood above the rest.
OG Anunoby delivered arguably the finest performance of his Knicks career, finishing with 33 points while shooting an ultra-efficient 10-for-15 from the field and 7-for-9 from beyond the arc. Yet his most important contribution came on the game’s final possession.
After Jalen Brunson’s potential game-winning jumper fell short, Anunoby reacted instantly. The forward crashed the glass, secured his first offensive rebound of the night, and converted the putback with just 1.2 seconds remaining.
It was a championship-level play in a championship moment.
Brunson, meanwhile, authored another legendary Finals performance.
His shooting numbers alone cannot fully explain his impact. After a quiet start and constant defensive pressure from the Spurs, the Knicks captain refused to let the game slip away. He continued attacking, creating offense, and keeping New York within striking distance.
His driving layup with 1:22 left gave the Knicks their first lead of the night at 105-104 and completed the comeback. Although he missed the final jumper that led to Anunoby’s putback, Brunson’s relentless leadership was the engine behind New York’s rally.
On the opposite side, Wembanyama’s stat line of 24 points and 13 rebounds looked impressive, but it failed to capture the frustration of his second half. After dominating early, he struggled with efficiency, finishing just 9-for-25 from the field. Several rushed decisions and two costly missed free throws in the closing minutes opened the door for the Knicks’ comeback.
For San Antonio, the defeat was devastating.
For New York, it may have been championship-defining.
The Knicks now hold a commanding 3-1 series lead and stand one victory away from completing a remarkable postseason run. More importantly, they have seized complete control of the Finals after producing a comeback that will forever be etched into NBA history.
Madison Square Garden has witnessed countless iconic moments over the decades. On this night, it witnessed one more. And if the Knicks finish the job, Game 4 will be remembered as the night a championship became inevitable.
