New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese has received another prestigious recognition after being named to the roster for the 2026 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T.
Major League Soccer officially unveiled the group of players who will participate in the highly anticipated event, which will bring together some of the competition’s most technically gifted performers. The showcase is designed to highlight accuracy, creativity, power and composure through a series of challenges involving shooting, passing and goalkeeping.
Freese will represent NYCFC alongside standout players selected from 10 different Major League Soccer clubs. Two goalkeepers from MLS NEXT Pro will also participate, adding another layer of talent to an event that has become one of the most entertaining attractions of MLS All-Star week.
Matt Freese earns recognition among MLS’s most talented players
Freese’s selection represents an important achievement for both the goalkeeper and New York City FC. Goalkeepers are often judged primarily on saves and defensive performances during competitive matches, but the Skills Challenge will offer Freese the opportunity to demonstrate other important elements of his game.
Distribution, reactions, accuracy and decision-making are all expected to play a major role in the different competitions. These are qualities that have helped Freese establish himself as a key figure for NYCFC and earn recognition beyond his performances in regular MLS action.
Being selected alongside players specifically chosen for their technical ability underlines Freese’s growing reputation across the league. His inclusion also gives NYCFC supporters another reason to follow the 2026 All-Star celebrations, with one of the club’s most important players set to take center stage in Charlotte.
The MLS All-Star Skills Challenge is not simply an exhibition. Although the atmosphere is designed to entertain supporters, the competitions demand concentration and precision. Even small errors can prove costly when players are asked to hit targets, complete difficult passes or produce decisive goalkeeping interventions under pressure.
For Freese, the occasion will provide a different test from a normal league fixture. Instead of organizing his defense and reacting to attacks over 90 minutes, he will be asked to perform in short, high-intensity situations where technique and execution become the main focus.
Charlotte prepares to host a spectacular night of skill and entertainment
The 2026 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on July 28 at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. The event will be shown live on Apple TV, allowing supporters across the country and internationally to follow the action.
The Skills Challenge has developed into an important part of MLS All-Star week, offering fans a more relaxed but still highly competitive alternative to the traditional All-Star match. Players are able to display individual qualities that may not always be visible during regular games, while supporters get a closer look at the technique required to compete at the highest level of North American soccer.
The competitions will once again test several areas of the game. Shooting challenges will emphasize power and finishing accuracy, passing events will reward vision and control, while the goalkeeping portions will demand sharp reflexes and composure.
The inclusion of players from multiple teams also creates an unusual atmosphere. Footballers who normally compete against one another during the MLS season will temporarily join forces or challenge each other in events built around entertainment, rivalry and individual excellence.
Freese’s presence ensures that New York City FC will be represented during one of the most anticipated nights of the All-Star calendar. His participation could also help increase his profile among a wider MLS audience, particularly if he produces a memorable performance during the goalkeeping challenges.
With some of the league’s most exciting players preparing to compete, the 2026 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge promises to deliver another evening filled with spectacular moments. For NYCFC fans, much of the attention will be directed toward Freese as he attempts to showcase the ability, confidence and technical quality that earned him his place on the roster.
