New York City FC headed into Tennessee hoping to extend their positive momentum before the World Cup break, but instead left with a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Nashville SC after another night where defensive details proved decisive.

Despite flashes of quality in attack and another important contribution from Nicolás Fernández Mercau, NYCFC were ultimately punished by Nashville’s efficiency on set pieces and inability to capitalize on several dangerous opportunities.

Goals from Jeisson Palacios and Maxwell Woledzi secured the victory for the hosts, while Fernández Mercau’s first-half penalty temporarily restored balance for Pascal Jansen’s side.

The result ends New York City’s recent unbeaten run and sends the team into the break with clear areas still needing improvement.

Fernández Mercau continues his strong season despite NYCFC defeat

One of the brightest signs for NYCFC once again came from Fernández Mercau.

The Argentine attacker looked lively from the opening minutes and consistently threatened Nashville’s defense with his movement and creativity. After testing goalkeeper Brian Schwake early in the match, he calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute following an aggressive run by Malachi Jones that forced Nashville into a foul inside the box.

That goal marked Fernández Mercau’s tenth of the season, underlining his growing importance within Pascal Jansen’s attacking structure.

Jones also impressed on the left flank, repeatedly creating dangerous situations with his pace and directness. One of NYCFC’s best opportunities of the first half came after the winger skipped past his defender and delivered a dangerous cutback that Fernández Mercau narrowly failed to convert.

Even late in the match, the visitors pushed hard for an equalizer.

A stoppage-time flowing move nearly rescued a point after Máximo Carrizo delivered a dangerous low cross into the area, but Schwake produced another key save to deny Fernández Mercau at the near post.

Defensive set-piece struggles cost New York City FC in Tennessee

While NYCFC showed positive moments offensively, defensive organization once again became the difference.

Both Nashville goals arrived from situations where the home side managed to exploit space inside the penalty area, particularly at the back post. Palacios opened the scoring in the 17th minute after escaping his marker on a corner, while Woledzi restored Nashville’s lead early in the second half with another headed finish.

Those moments exposed defensive lapses that ultimately overshadowed many of New York City’s positive attacking sequences.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese produced several solid interventions to keep NYCFC alive, including important saves against Hany Mukhtar and Ahmed Qasem, but Nashville continued to create danger whenever they attacked wide areas or targeted aerial situations.

Pascal Jansen attempted to change the rhythm through substitutions, introducing Hannes Wolf, Jonny Shore and later Kevin Pierre, who made his MLS debut. However, Nashville defended with discipline during the closing stages and limited clear-cut chances despite New York City’s late pressure.

The defeat is frustrating because NYCFC showed enough attacking quality to leave Tennessee with a result. Instead, missed opportunities and defensive errors leave the club heading into the World Cup pause searching for greater balance and consistency.

For Jansen, the break now arrives at an important moment — an opportunity to recover players, reorganize defensively and prepare for a crucial second half of the MLS season.
