The United States Men's National Team closed its World Cup preparations with a narrow defeat, but the final result may not tell the full story of an encouraging performance.
In front of a packed crowd in Chicago, the USMNT suffered a 2-1 loss to Germany in its final send-off match before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite falling short on the scoreboard, Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed signs of growth, resilience and tactical maturity against one of the strongest teams in international football.
Germany struck early through Kai Havertz before Antonee Robinson restored parity with a spectacular finish. Leroy Sané eventually delivered the decisive goal in the second half, but the Americans left the field with reasons for optimism ahead of their tournament opener against Paraguay.
More importantly, the performance suggested that the gap between the United States and the world’s elite may not be as wide as some feared after a disappointing international window earlier this year.
Tyler Adams’ Return Changes the Identity of the USMNT
Perhaps the most encouraging development for the United States was the return of Tyler Adams.
The midfielder's influence extends far beyond statistics. His leadership, defensive awareness and ability to control transitions provide balance throughout the team. While he was not flawless against Germany, his presence immediately elevated the overall structure of Pochettino’s system.
The difference was evident when compared to the performances against Belgium and Portugal earlier in the year, matches that exposed several weaknesses and raised concerns about the team's readiness for the World Cup.
Against Germany, however, the United States looked more organized and confident in possession. Adams helped stabilize the midfield and allowed the Americans to compete on equal footing for long stretches of the match.
His return could prove to be one of the most important factors in determining how far the USMNT can advance during the tournament.
Competitive Performance Offers Encouragement Before Paraguay Clash
While losses are never ideal, context matters.
The United States not only competed with Germany but also controlled significant portions of possession and created moments that suggested they could challenge top-level opponents. Antonee Robinson's equalizer highlighted the team's attacking potential, while several younger players continued to show signs of development under Pochettino's guidance.
There remain unanswered questions.
Goalkeeping remains an area of concern, and the health of central defender Chris Richards will be closely monitored ahead of the tournament. His expected return would strengthen a defensive unit that occasionally struggled with Germany's movement and technical quality.
Still, the overall takeaway is positive. The USMNT demonstrated discipline, intensity and tactical cohesion against a team widely considered among the contenders for the World Cup title.
As attention now turns to Friday's opener against Paraguay, confidence inside the American camp appears to be growing. The objective is no longer simply to participate on home soil. Pochettino has gradually built a group capable of believing it can compete with elite nations.
Germany may have won the match, but the United States gained something valuable as well: renewed belief that this World Cup could become a memorable chapter in the program's history.
