The 2026 NBA Finals have arrived, and while much of the spotlight naturally belongs to Victor Wembanyama, another matchup could prove just as decisive for the San Antonio Spurs. Devin Vassell is preparing to take on one of the toughest defensive assignments in basketball: slowing down Jalen Brunson.
The Knicks return to the NBA Finals after a long wait, carrying momentum, confidence and one of the most reliable playoff shot-makers in the league. Brunson has been the engine of New York’s run, controlling tempo, attacking mismatches and delivering in pressure moments.
For San Antonio, that means stopping the Knicks starts with making Brunson uncomfortable. Vassell understands that clearly, and he is not treating the assignment as a routine defensive job.
Vassell Knows Brunson Requires Discipline
After helping the Spurs survive a demanding Western Conference Finals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Vassell now shifts his attention from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Brunson. The two guards create problems in different ways, but both force defenders to stay locked in on every possession.
Vassell described Brunson as a highly skilled player who knows exactly how to reach his preferred spots on the floor. That detail matters. Brunson does not rely only on speed or size. He wins with footwork, patience, balance and deception.
His shot fakes are a major part of the challenge. One poor closeout, one unnecessary jump or one moment of lost discipline can turn into free throws, an open jumper or a defensive breakdown. Vassell acknowledged that guarding Brunson will require film study, preparation and constant focus.
That mindset reflects how seriously the Spurs are approaching New York’s star guard. San Antonio cannot afford to let Brunson dictate every possession, especially late in games when his ability to create offense becomes even more dangerous.
The Finals Could Turn on This Guard Matchup
While Wembanyama remains the biggest name in the series, the Brunson-Vassell battle could shape the rhythm of the Finals. If Vassell can pressure Brunson without fouling and force him into tougher looks, San Antonio’s defense becomes far more stable.
But if Brunson consistently gets into the paint, manipulates defenders and creates clean opportunities for teammates, the Knicks’ offense can become extremely difficult to contain.
This is where Vassell’s role becomes crucial. His job will not simply be to contest shots. He must fight over screens, avoid biting on fakes, recover quickly and stay mentally sharp through long possessions. Against Brunson, defense is not just physical. It is psychological.
The Knicks know their offense flows best when Brunson is comfortable. The Spurs know they must disrupt that comfort early.
That chess match could become one of the defining stories of Game 1 and the entire series. Vassell has already made it clear he welcomes the responsibility, but the challenge ahead is enormous.
Brunson has spent the postseason proving he can solve almost every defensive coverage thrown at him. Now Vassell gets his chance to test him on the NBA’s biggest stage.
The Finals may be promoted as Wembanyama’s moment, but if San Antonio wants to lift the trophy, slowing Brunson may be just as important.
