The United States did not simply win its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It delivered a message.
In front of more than 70,000 fans at SoFi Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s team produced one of the most convincing performances in modern USMNT history, sweeping aside Paraguay 4-1 with confidence, quality and attacking ambition. The result was already secure before the final seconds, but Gio Reyna’s spectacular outside-of-the-foot finish transformed the evening from a strong victory into something far more symbolic.
It was not just a fourth goal. It was a declaration of identity.
For years, the United States has tried to prove it belongs among football’s serious nations. Against Paraguay, the Americans played with the technical freedom, rhythm and personality of a team no longer interested in simply competing. They wanted to dominate.
Reyna’s Final Touch Turns Victory Into a Statement
Reyna’s late goal could easily have been viewed as a simple addition to the goal difference column, a useful detail in the complicated mathematics of group-stage football. Instead, the manner of the finish gave it a deeper meaning.
The strike, delivered with audacity and control, captured the spirit of the entire performance. The USMNT played with courage, invention and a level of polish that once seemed rare on the World Cup stage. This was not a team surviving through energy alone. This was a side capable of hurting opponents with skill.
The United States had already taken control early. Weston McKennie helped force the opening goal with a decisive run and cross, while Christian Pulisic provided the creative spark during a superb first half. Folarin Balogun then took center stage, scoring twice and giving the Americans the cutting edge required to turn superiority into a commanding lead.
By halftime, the match had effectively been decided. Paraguay, usually difficult to break down, looked overwhelmed by the movement and intensity of Pochettino’s side.
Pochettino’s Team Shows a New Face of American Soccer
What made the performance so important was not only the scoreline, but the way it was achieved.
The USMNT has often been associated with spirit, athleticism and resilience. Those qualities remain part of its DNA, but this display showed something more complete. Malik Tillman found pockets of space and created problems with his passing. McKennie drove through midfield with freedom. Pulisic compressed a match-winning influence into just 45 minutes before leaving with what was described as a minor issue.
At the back, Chris Richards delivered a remarkably composed performance, moving the ball with precision and helping the United States control long stretches of the match. The only real regret was the goal conceded in the second half, when Paraguay briefly exposed the defense and Mauricio beat Matt Freese to make it 3-1.
That moment prevented a perfect night, but it did little to change the overall meaning of the result.
This was the kind of performance the United States has been waiting for: not a brave defeat, not a narrow upset, not a gritty survival act, but a dominant World Cup win built on confidence and quality.
The challenge now is repetition. One brilliant night does not define a tournament, and Pochettino will know that Australia and Turkey will present different tests. But every major run needs a beginning, and the USMNT could hardly have chosen a more powerful one.
If this was the opening statement, the rest of Group D has been warned.
