Sergi Roberto Makes MLS Move Official: Barcelona Icon Joins LA Galaxy in Major Coup

A decorated Barcelona career, two seasons in Italian football and now a completely different challenge in Major League Soccer. Sergi Roberto is officially a new LA Galaxy player, bringing experience, versatility and a winning pedigree to one of the most recognizable franchises in American soccer.

The 34-year-old arrives as a free agent following the conclusion of his spell with Como and has signed a contract running through June 30, 2028, with an option covering the 2028-29 season. According to the Galaxy's announcement, the deal remains subject to receipt of his P-1 visa.

For Roberto, the transfer represents much more than another contract late in his career. It provides an opportunity to become an influential figure in MLS while reuniting with another famous graduate of Barcelona's academy, Riqui Puig.

From Barcelona and Serie A to a new challenge in Los Angeles

Roberto's name will always be synonymous with Barcelona. Developed at La Masia, he spent the majority of his career at the Catalan club and became valued for something increasingly rare at the highest level: the ability to perform several different jobs without disrupting the structure of the team.

Primarily a midfielder, Roberto also spent significant periods operating at right-back and developed an understanding of possession-based football that should translate naturally to MLS.

His subsequent move to Como allowed him to experience Serie A and a different tactical environment. Two seasons later, he is ready for another significant change.

Los Angeles offers a very different setting, but the Galaxy are getting a player accustomed to pressure, major matches and demanding tactical systems. At 34, Roberto may no longer provide the physical intensity of his peak Barcelona years, but his intelligence and ability to interpret space could prove particularly valuable.

A Barcelona connection with Riqui Puig could reshape the Galaxy

The reunion with Puig immediately becomes one of the most intriguing aspects of the deal.

Both were developed within Barcelona's footballing philosophy, meaning their understanding of positioning, short combinations and possession should provide a natural foundation. Roberto's versatility could also allow the Galaxy to use him differently depending on the opponent.

Beyond tactics, his arrival brings another recognizable European name to MLS at a time when the league continues to strengthen its international profile.

For Roberto, however, this is not simply a farewell tour. A contract potentially extending into 2029 suggests both player and club view the relationship as a genuine medium-term project.
