New York City FC remains in the postseason race, but the victory over Atlanta United has not put qualification entirely in its own hands.

According to MLS’s post-match update, NYCFC sits 12th in the Eastern Conference with 38 points, three behind Columbus Crew in the final Wild Card position, with two matches remaining.

Two victories would take New York to 44 points. Four points would produce a final total of 42, while one win and one defeat would leave the club on 41.

Those totals explain the immediate objective, but they do not establish a guaranteed qualification route. Results involving the teams above NYCFC—and any applicable tiebreakers—will determine whether a late surge is enough.

For the players, the most useful approach is to keep that uncertainty outside their decision-making. Chasing goals recklessly because another result looks unfavorable can damage the match they actually control.

The task is to create pressure on the teams ahead by collecting points, then reassess the standings after each fixture.

Supporters will understandably follow several scorelines at once. On the field, however, NYCFC must remain focused on its own spacing, finishing and defensive concentration.

The Atlanta victory bought another opportunity. Taking it will require a strong finish and favorable developments elsewhere, rather than confidence that survival is already assured.
