New York City FC’s playoff hopes ended with a frustrating 1-1 draw against CF Montréal in Queens. Andrés Perea put the hosts ahead before halftime, but Daniel Ríos equalized in stoppage time to deny Pascal Jansen’s side a vital victory.

After beating Atlanta United with a late winner earlier in the week, NYCFC experienced the opposite outcome. This time, a stoppage-time goal took away the result they needed to keep their postseason pursuit alive.

Perea Gives NYCFC the Lead

Jansen made two changes to the lineup that faced Atlanta, bringing in Talles Magno and Jonny Shore for the injured Alonso Martínez and Aiden O’Neill.

Montréal generated the first opportunities. Hennadii Synchuk saw an effort strike James Sands before Viktor Radojević sent the follow-up over. Dani Pereira also failed to keep a later attempt below the crossbar.

NYCFC responded through Perea, who controlled a Nicolás Fernández Mercau free kick inside the penalty area, turned and shot over.

The midfielder made his next opportunity count. Fernández Mercau intercepted a clearance from Montréal’s goalkeeper and supplied Perea, who finished calmly to give New York City the advantage.

NYCFC Create Chances but Cannot Extend Their Advantage

Nico Cavallo replaced Kevin O’Toole at halftime, and both teams returned with attacking intent.

Synchuk narrowly missed the target from distance for Montréal. At the other end, Brayan Vera blocked Fernández Mercau’s attempt before Shore fired over.

Jansen made three further substitutions in the 57th minute, introducing Hannes Wolf, Raul Gustavo and Luighi for Talles Magno, Shore and Bénie Traoré.

Wolf almost made an immediate impact, meeting Fernández Mercau’s layoff with a shot that was blocked. Luighi later recovered possession high up the pitch and drove toward goal, only for Samsy Keita to push away his curling effort.

Those chances offered NYCFC opportunities to establish a more comfortable lead. Their failure to find a second goal kept Montréal within reach.

Freese Makes an Important Save as Montréal Push Forward

Matt Freese was called into action when Alexis Sánchez lifted a free kick over the defensive wall. The NYCFC goalkeeper reacted well to protect the lead.

Keaton Parks then replaced Perea in the 70th minute as the hosts made their final substitution.

Montréal continued to search for openings, with Wiki Carmona working his way through a crowded penalty area before missing from a difficult angle.

NYCFC also remained a threat. Agustín Ojeda delivered a free kick toward Gustavo, but the defender directed his header wide. Carmona later missed another attempt as the match moved toward its closing stages.

Daniel Ríos Delivers the Decisive Blow

The equalizer arrived in stoppage time.

Ríos met a deflected cross and guided the ball into the top corner, leaving Freese unable to preserve the clean sheet.

Ojeda attempted to produce an immediate response, but Keita held his low strike. Despite the urgency of the final moments, NYCFC could not recover the lead.

The draw ended their playoff hopes and left the home side reflecting on a match they had been in position to win.

Missed Opportunities Leave NYCFC With Regrets

The defining issue was New York City’s inability to build on Perea’s opener. Wolf, Luighi and Gustavo all had opportunities to increase the advantage, but Montréal remained only one goal away from changing the outcome.

The contrast with the Atlanta victory was particularly painful. A late goal had kept NYCFC’s ambitions alive earlier in the week; another late goal now brought that pursuit to a close.

For Jansen’s side, the final whistle confirmed both a missed opportunity on the night and the end of the postseason chase.
