Bénie Traoré delivered when New York City FC could least afford another disappointment.

The substitute struck a spectacular stoppage-time winner to secure a 2–1 victory over Atlanta United in Queens, rescuing three crucial points after the visitors had threatened to derail NYCFC’s night with a late equalizer.

The result kept New York City’s postseason chances alive and ended a lengthy wait for a home victory. Supporters had not celebrated a league win on their own turf since July 25.

With the New York Red Bulls also losing, NYCFC gained ground in the playoff chase. Qualification remains a difficult task, but Traoré ensured the fight would continue.

Freese Keeps NYCFC Level During Difficult Opening

New York City struggled to settle into the match, allowing Atlanta to create the more dangerous early opportunities.

Matt Freese made an important intervention in the 15th minute, standing strong to deny Alexey Miranchuk from close range.

Atlanta appeared to have taken the lead five minutes later through Breel Embolo’s header. A VAR review, however, identified an offside in the buildup, and the goal was disallowed.

That reprieve kept NYCFC level, but another setback soon followed. Alonso Martínez left the field in the 28th minute with an apparent hamstring problem, raising fresh concern for a striker working his way back from an ACL injury.

The nature and severity of the latest issue remained unclear.

Talles Magno Helps Lift the Attack

Talles Magno replaced Martínez and brought greater urgency to NYCFC’s forward play.

The hosts began keeping possession more effectively and finding opportunities around Atlanta’s penalty area, although their first shot on target did not arrive until the 42nd minute.

Hannes Wolf supplied a well-placed cutback for Nicolás Fernández Mercau, whose close-range effort was stopped by Lucas Hoyos.

NYCFC reached halftime without conceding, but the opening 45 minutes had offered little reassurance in a game they needed to win.

Fernández Mercau Finally Breaks the Deadlock

Atlanta continued to threaten after the restart. Thiago Martins produced an important block to prevent Miranchuk from turning another promising opening into a goal.

At the other end, Andrés Perea had a chance during a scramble inside the box in the 58th minute, but Hoyos again kept NYCFC out.

The breakthrough eventually arrived from a set piece.

Awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, Fernández Mercau drove his effort through the crowded space in front of him and into the bottom-right corner in the 70th minute.

Hoyos was unable to react, and NYCFC finally had the advantage.

Atlanta’s Equalizer Sets Up a Dramatic Finish

The lead did not end Atlanta’s resistance.

As the visitors continued pushing forward, Fafà Picault struck the post. The rebound fell invitingly for Embolo, who headed into the net with Freese still recovering from his attempt to stop the initial shot.

For NYCFC, the equalizer threatened another frustrating ending. A draw would have dealt a damaging blow to their already narrow postseason hopes.

Traoré had other plans.

Introduced late in the match, the forward created enough space outside the penalty area to unleash a curling finish that beat Hoyos and restored New York City’s lead in stoppage time.

It was a decisive contribution from a player whose performances since arriving during the summer had drawn scrutiny.

A Home Win That Gives NYCFC Something to Build On

The performance was uneven, and Atlanta exposed vulnerabilities that NYCFC will need to address. Yet the hosts continued searching for a winner after surrendering their advantage.

Fernández Mercau supplied the initial breakthrough, Freese made an essential early save, and Traoré produced the moment that settled the contest.

The victory does not remove the difficulty of the remaining playoff chase. It does give NYCFC three valuable points and a much-needed positive result in front of their supporters.

After months of frustration at home, a late substitute finally provided a finish worth celebrating.
