New York City FC finished its 2026 MLS campaign with a 1-0 victory over D.C. United, as Talles Magno delivered the decisive goal in the 87th minute.
With playoff qualification already out of reach, NYCFC still had an opportunity to close the season positively. Pascal Jansen selected a strong lineup, placing Luighi and Talles Magno at the center of the attack.
The visitors created opportunities throughout the match but needed a late counterattack to finally beat goalkeeper Jordan Farr. Bénie Traoré supplied the assist, allowing Magno to secure the Decision Day win.
NYCFC Creates Chances in an Open First Half
D.C. United produced the first significant opportunity when João Peglow intercepted a Keaton Parks pass and forced Matt Freese into a save.
Parks nearly responded immediately. Luighi’s clever touch released the midfielder close to goal, but his finish went narrowly wide.
NYCFC gradually became more threatening. Luighi tested Farr after driving forward in the 21st minute, before Talles Magno forced the goalkeeper into two more saves.
Despite that pressure, the visitors could not establish a first-half advantage. Kevin O’Toole had a late attempt from distance blocked by Oscar Avilez, leaving the teams level at the interval.
Freese Keeps D.C. United Out as Jansen Makes Changes
Jansen introduced Jonny Shore for Parks at halftime, then brought on Agustín Ojeda in place of Hannes Wolf around the hour mark.
Both teams continued searching for an opening. Kimito Nono shot over for D.C., while Magno threatened after a cross-field pass from Fernández Mercau created a favorable attacking situation.
Freese remained important at the other end. He dealt with a long-range attempt from Nathan Ordaz and later saved from Andre Dozzell. Peglow also had an opportunity after NYCFC failed to clear a low delivery, but his effort went over.
The visitors nearly found a breakthrough through their Brazilian forwards when Magno released Luighi, who could not finish from a difficult angle.
Traoré Adds a New Threat From the Bench
A double substitution in the 69th minute brought Max Murray and Bénie Traoré into the game for Thiago Martins and Luighi.
Traoré quickly became involved. He headed an O’Toole delivery narrowly wide, with Magno unable to reach the ball for a finishing touch.
D.C. also came close when Nicola Markovic headed wide from close range following a move that began with a long throw.
As the game entered its closing stages, Shore tried from distance, Traoré had another header saved, and Fernández Mercau struck the side netting. NYCFC continued to create opportunities, but the match remained scoreless.
Talles Magno Finishes a Decisive Counterattack
The winning goal came from a rapid transition in the 87th minute.
With D.C. attacking, Tayvon Gray made an important block. Traoré then turned sharply and accelerated forward, helping create a three-on-one break.
He released Magno on the left, and the Brazilian moved inside before placing his finish beyond Farr and into the bottom corner.
The goal rewarded NYCFC’s persistence and gave Traoré a decisive contribution from the bench.
A Winning Finish to NYCFC’s 2026 Season
The late strike secured a 1-0 victory and a clean sheet for New York City FC.
Missing the playoffs remains the broader disappointment of the campaign, but the final performance offered a positive ending. Freese made the saves required to keep the game level, Jansen’s substitutes contributed, and Magno provided the finish that separated the teams.
NYCFC closed its season with a move that connected defensive effort to attacking quality: Gray’s block, Traoré’s acceleration and Magno’s composure turned a scoreless finale into a road victory.
