Former New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira has officially been dismissed from his role as head coach of Genoa. The Italian club announced the decision early on Tuesday morning following a difficult run of results in Serie A.

In an official statement, Genoa wrote:

“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the First Team.
The club wishes to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their tenure and extends best wishes for their future careers.”

Roberto Murgita Takes Over as Interim Head Coach

Following Vieira’s departure, Roberto Murgita has been appointed as interim manager, with club legend Domenico Criscito serving as his assistant. The duo will be tasked with steadying the ship as Genoa look to climb back up the Serie A standings.

This change marks the end of Vieira’s brief spell in charge, which saw Genoa struggle to find consistency both offensively and defensively. Despite flashes of progress, the club’s management opted for a reset to spark improvement before the midway point of the season.

Vieira’s Struggles and Genoa’s Ambitions

Vieira, who took charge in the summer, had been expected to build on Genoa’s promotion momentum. However, results failed to meet expectations, with the team lingering near the bottom half of the table.

Known for his disciplined approach and possession-based football, the Frenchman struggled to translate his philosophy into consistent performances in Serie A. Genoa’s hierarchy decided that a new direction was necessary to reignite their campaign.
