The New York Knicks are still searching for their first victory, and their latest defeat came against an Orlando Magic team already dealing with injury problems.
Franz Wagner took over down the stretch, powering Orlando to a 35-16 fourth-quarter advantage that left the defending champions with a third consecutive loss. The comeback delivered Sean Sweeney his first victory as Magic head coach, although a serious knee injury to Jalen Suggs overshadowed the result.
For New York, another productive scoring night from its leading players failed to translate into a win.
Wagner Takes Over as the Knicks Collapse Late
Wagner saved almost all of his scoring for the decisive stretch. He poured in 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, turning the closing period into a showcase of his ability to take control.
His impact extended well beyond scoring. Wagner also collected 13 rebounds and nine assists, finishing just one assist short of a triple-double.
The Knicks had no effective answer to his late surge. Orlando’s 19-point advantage in the final quarter proved decisive, exposing New York’s inability to contain the Magic when the game reached its most important moments.
For Sweeney, it was a memorable first win. However, Suggs’ knee injury leaves Orlando with a significant concern despite the breakthrough result.
Brunson’s 28 Points Cannot Prevent an Unwanted Milestone
Jalen Brunson led New York with 28 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby scored 22 apiece. Their combined 72 points gave the Knicks substantial offensive production, but it was not enough to overcome the damage done in the fourth quarter.
The defeat drops New York to 0-3, an opening stretch no defending NBA champion had experienced since the 2011-12 Dallas Mavericks.
Three games do not define a season, but the manner of this loss gives the Knicks a clear issue to address. Scoring from their biggest names will only carry them so far if they cannot produce stops and maintain control late in games.
The immediate challenge is straightforward: respond with a more complete performance and secure the first victory of their title defense. After another difficult finish, the pressure to do so is growing.
