NYCFC Makes Bold Move for Alexandru Musi — Is He the Missing Piece in New York’s Attack?

New York City FC has reportedly submitted an offer for Dinamo București attacker Alexandru Musi as the club searches for additional creativity and depth during the final phase of the MLS transfer window.

According to reports in Romania, NYCFC has offered approximately €1.8 million plus performance-related bonuses for the 22-year-old. Dinamo is believed to value Musi closer to €3 million, leaving a significant gap between the two clubs.

Musi’s agent, Cristian Cernodolea, confirmed concrete interest from an important MLS team familiar with Romanian players, although no agreement has been announced. Musi has also said that nothing official has reached him personally and that his immediate focus remains on performing for Dinamo and competing for trophies.

The difference between those positions suggests the negotiations are still at an early stage. Nevertheless, NYCFC’s reported interest makes tactical sense for a team dealing with injuries, transfer uncertainty and an urgent need for greater attacking variety.

Why Alexandru Musi Could Fit Pascal Jansen’s System

Musi is primarily a left winger but can operate on the opposite flank, as an attacking midfielder or behind a central striker. Dinamo coach Nuno Campos has also used him as a second forward in a 4-2-2-2 formation this season.

That versatility would be particularly useful for Pascal Jansen. NYCFC has frequently been forced to modify its attacking structure because of injuries, while several young players have been asked to accept larger roles earlier than expected.

Musi could provide direct running, close control and the ability to attack defenders in one-on-one situations. He is comfortable receiving the ball in wide areas before moving inside, but he can also find space between midfield and defense.

His production has improved alongside his tactical development. Musi recorded eight goals and five assists in 29 appearances across all competitions last season. He then began the new campaign by scoring twice in his first five matches.

Those numbers demonstrate that he is more than a purely developmental signing. At 22, Musi still offers considerable potential, but he could also compete for first-team minutes immediately.

His flexibility would allow Jansen to use him alongside Nicolás Fernández Mercau or as an alternative when the Argentine is unavailable. Musi could also help compensate for the creative void left by Maxi Moralez’s season-ending injury.

The physical transition from Romanian football to MLS would require adaptation. Musi would encounter more travel, greater athleticism and a different competitive rhythm. His ability to play several positions, however, could help him earn minutes while adjusting to his new environment.

Dinamo’s €3 Million Demand Could Complicate the Deal

The principal obstacle is Dinamo’s valuation. The Romanian club reportedly wants around €3 million, approximately €1.2 million more than NYCFC’s initial proposal.

Dinamo has understandable reasons for demanding a premium. Musi is under contract, has started the season well and remains an important part of a team with domestic ambitions. Selling him late in the window would also create the challenge of finding a replacement.

His agent acknowledged Dinamo’s work in rebuilding its squad and recognized why the club wants to keep the player. He also suggested, however, that a significant valuation should be reflected in Musi’s role and status within the team.

NYCFC must now decide how aggressively to pursue the transfer. Increasing the guaranteed amount, improving the bonus structure or including a future sell-on percentage could reduce the distance without meeting Dinamo’s full demand immediately.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Fernández Mercau may also influence the decision. NYCFC has reportedly rejected a major offer for its leading scorer, but another substantial bid could change the situation before the deadline. Musi could be viewed either as additional support for Fernández Mercau or as part of a longer-term succession plan.

There is precedent for NYCFC recruiting Romanian attacking talent. Alexandru Mitriță joined the club in 2019 and became a prominent offensive player, giving the organization familiarity with the market.

For now, Musi remains a Dinamo player and has publicly emphasized his commitment to the Romanian club. The reported offer nevertheless reveals NYCFC’s intention to strengthen its attack rather than simply survive its current injury crisis.

If the two clubs can bridge the valuation gap, Musi could arrive as a young, versatile and increasingly productive player capable of helping immediately while developing into a more valuable asset. That combination makes him one of the most intriguing names linked with NYCFC this summer.
