NYCFC’s Next Transfer Window Could Define the Future: Three Positions New York Must Reinforce

New York City FC do not need a complete rebuild. They do, however, need a smarter and deeper roster if the long-term goal is to become a consistent MLS Cup contender.

The current five-game winless stretch has exposed several weaknesses that injuries alone cannot fully explain. Pascal Jansen still has talented players, an emerging young core and difference-makers such as Nico Fernández Mercau and Matt Freese. But the roster becomes considerably more fragile once a few starters disappear.

That makes the next transfer window particularly important.

NYCFC must avoid adding players simply for depth. The priority should be finding profiles who can genuinely compete for meaningful minutes and give Jansen tactical alternatives when the ideal starting XI is unavailable.

A second reliable striker has become impossible to ignore

The most obvious need is another proven goal scorer.

Alonso Martínez remains enormously important to the attack, but his absence has shown just how dependent NYCFC can become on one central forward. Luighi has intriguing upside and deserves opportunities, yet asking a young player to immediately replace a primary scorer is a significant burden.

New York need another striker capable of starting games without dramatically lowering the level of the attack.

That player does not necessarily have to be a superstar. He needs to offer goals, intelligent movement and the ability to occupy center backs consistently. Ideally, the new forward would also bring characteristics slightly different from Martínez, giving Jansen another way to attack specific opponents.

Adding a reliable No. 9 would also allow Luighi to develop without being forced into responsibility before he is completely ready.

Defense and midfield depth could decide whether NYCFC become true contenders

The other two priorities are closely connected.

NYCFC need more defensive stability, particularly a player capable of covering multiple positions without forcing Jansen into experimental adjustments. The Toronto draw highlighted how quickly the structure can become vulnerable when injuries or substitutions alter the back line.

A versatile defender — ideally comfortable at center back and full-back — would give Jansen far greater security across a long MLS season.

Then comes midfield.

Maxi Moralez’s absence has emphasized how much NYCFC still depend on players capable of controlling tempo and creating between the lines. Fernández Mercau can provide attacking invention, but New York would benefit enormously from another midfielder who can receive under pressure, progress the ball and produce the final pass.

That addition would also reduce the burden on Keaton Parks and the younger midfielders being asked to handle increasingly important roles.

This is why the next window matters beyond a few roster spots.

NYCFC already have the beginnings of a competitive core. What they need now is the depth to protect it. A reliable striker, a versatile defender and another creative midfielder could be the difference between remaining a dangerous but inconsistent team and becoming a genuine MLS Cup contender.
