NYCFC’s Biggest Problem Is Clear: Who Is Going to Score the Goals?

New York City FC’s 0-0 draw against Nashville SC highlighted one issue that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: who is going to score the goals consistently for Pascal Jansen’s team?

NYCFC created several promising situations at Yankee Stadium, especially through Agustín Ojeda, Bénie Traoré, Luighi and Malachi Jones. But despite getting into dangerous areas, the Boys in Blue were unable to turn those moments into a winning goal.

That lack of efficiency in the final third could become one of the biggest challenges of the season.

NYCFC Created Chances but Lacked the Final Touch

The problem against Nashville was not a complete lack of attacking play.

NYCFC found space, pressed well and created moments where the visiting defense looked vulnerable. Traoré’s run in behind during the first half almost produced a goal for Luighi, while Ojeda repeatedly caused problems from the right.

Later, Malachi Jones came inches away from converting a dangerous low cross.

The opportunities were there.

The finishing was not.

That distinction matters, because it suggests NYCFC are not far away from becoming more dangerous. But in MLS, being close is not enough.

Luighi Still Needs More Support

Luighi has shown promise since arriving, but expecting one young forward to carry the entire scoring burden would be unrealistic.

His movement and ability to connect with Traoré are encouraging, yet NYCFC need goals from several areas of the field.

The wingers must contribute.

The midfield must arrive in the box more often.

And the substitutes need to provide real impact when matches become tight.

Against Nashville, NYCFC’s attack looked lively but not ruthless.

Ojeda and Traoré Can Help Solve the Problem

Two players who may become increasingly important are Agustín Ojeda and Bénie Traoré.

Ojeda was one of the most dangerous players on the field, repeatedly attacking from the right and creating late chances.

Traoré also showed his ability to stretch the defense and make aggressive runs behind the back line.

If both players can become more consistent in the final third, NYCFC’s attack could improve quickly.

The next step is clear: more goals and assists.

Jansen Needs More Efficiency, Not Just Possession

Pascal Jansen’s team can move the ball well and create territorial pressure, but games are ultimately decided inside the penalty area.

The 0-0 draw showed that NYCFC still need greater composure when the decisive moment arrives.

That could mean quicker decisions, better movement in the box or simply more confidence in front of goal.

Whatever the solution, Jansen will know that clean sheets alone cannot carry the team through an entire season.

NYCFC Need a Reliable Scoring Formula

The Nashville game was not a disaster.

NYCFC defended well, earned a point and produced several positive attacking moments.

But the bigger concern remains.

If New York City FC want to climb the standings and become a serious playoff threat, they need to turn chances into goals far more consistently.
