NYCFC Fall Short Against Cruz Azul: Late Deflection Decides Leagues Cup Thriller

New York City FC could not build on their opening Leagues Cup victory, falling 2-1 to Cruz Azul in a tight, competitive match decided by a cruel deflection late in the second half.

Pascal Jansen made three changes from the side that beat Santos Laguna 2-0, bringing Nico Fernández Mercau, Hannes Wolf and Talles Magno back into the starting XI. The adjustments helped NYCFC begin aggressively, with the Boys in Blue pressing high and creating one of the first dangerous moments through Wolf inside the opening minutes.

Cruz Azul gradually settled and began testing Matt Freese from distance, while NYCFC continued to look dangerous in transition. The Mexican side eventually found the breakthrough in the 35th minute when Agustín Palavecino finished neatly from the edge of the box.

New York City, however, responded before halftime.

Max Murray answers after Cruz Azul’s opener

Deep into first-half stoppage time, NYCFC won a set piece and Fernández Mercau produced an excellent delivery toward the back post. Max Murray attacked it aggressively and powered home the equalizer with a strong header, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.

The goal gave Jansen’s side renewed confidence and NYCFC started the second half with purpose. Andrés Perea tested Kevin Mier early, while both teams continued exchanging chances without fully taking control.

Jansen then turned to his bench just before the hour mark, introducing Mitja Ilenič, Malachi Jones and Kevin O’Toole in an attempt to increase the tempo.

The changes almost paid off immediately.

Jones released Talles Magno down the right in the 63rd minute, and the Brazilian drove a dangerous low ball across goal. Fernández Mercau threw himself at the delivery but missed contact by inches, one of NYCFC’s best opportunities to take the lead.

Paradela’s deflected strike breaks NYCFC late

As the match entered its final stages, Cruz Azul began creating more pressure around the edge of the penalty area.

Jansen made another attacking adjustment in the 75th minute, sending on Luighi and Benié Traoré, but three minutes later the decisive moment arrived at the opposite end.

José Paradela collected the ball outside the box and fired toward goal. His effort took a heavy deflection off James Sands, completely wrong-footing Freese and leaving the goalkeeper with no realistic chance of stopping it.

NYCFC pushed hard for another equalizer and continued committing bodies forward, but Cruz Azul defended with discipline and managed the closing minutes effectively.

The defeat leaves New York City with one win and one loss from their opening two Leagues Cup matches. The performance contained encouraging moments — particularly the response to going behind and the quality created in transition — but NYCFC were ultimately punished by fine margins.

A first-half comeback suggested another positive Leagues Cup night was possible. Instead, one late deflection proved decisive, leaving Jansen’s team frustrated after a match that could easily have gone either way.
