Nashville and New England Could Define NYCFC’s Season — The Next Two Games Suddenly Feel Massive

Two games in August or September are rarely supposed to define an entire MLS season.

For New York City FC, however, the upcoming meetings with Nashville SC and New England Revolution are beginning to feel considerably bigger than ordinary regular-season fixtures.

The reason is simple: NYCFC have gone five league matches without a victory.

The 1-1 draw against Toronto FC extended a frustrating sequence in which Pascal Jansen’s team have repeatedly shown enough quality to compete but not enough consistency to finish the job. Leads have disappeared, defensive mistakes have returned and injuries have made an already difficult stretch even more complicated.

That means the next two matches are no longer simply opportunities to collect points.

They are an opportunity to change the direction of the season.

Five games without a win have removed NYCFC’s margin for error

A short winless run can be dismissed as normal MLS turbulence. Five matches begin to create a different kind of pressure.

Every missed opportunity becomes heavier.

Against Toronto, NYCFC had exactly the type of situation they needed. Nico Fernández Mercau gave New York the lead, the team created opportunities for a second goal and there was a chance to finally end the negative run.

Instead, Daniel Sallói equalized and another potential victory disappeared.

That result makes the Nashville matchup even more important.

NYCFC need to rediscover the feeling of controlling a game and closing it out. Another strong performance followed by another draw would do little to change the larger narrative.

At this point, points matter more than encouraging signs.

Jansen also needs his team to regain some psychological momentum. The longer a winless run lasts, the easier it becomes for players to feel that every mistake will be punished and every one-goal lead is fragile.

One victory could change that atmosphere immediately.

Six points could restart the season — another setback could deepen the crisis

The opportunity is significant because consecutive wins could completely alter the conversation around NYCFC.

Six points against Nashville and New England would not solve every tactical problem, but they would restore confidence, improve the playoff outlook and provide Jansen with valuable breathing room.

Suddenly, the Toronto draw could be viewed as the end of a difficult period rather than another step toward a deeper decline.

The opposite scenario is much more uncomfortable.

If NYCFC emerge from these matches with another poor return, the five-game winless streak could become seven. At that stage, questions about playoff positioning, Jansen’s decisions and the overall direction of the team would become increasingly difficult to avoid.

That is why these matches feel so important.

The squad remains talented. Matt Freese continues to provide security in goal, Fernández Mercau is becoming increasingly decisive and the return of injured players should eventually strengthen Jansen’s options.

But NYCFC cannot keep waiting for the ideal circumstances.

They need results now.

Nashville and New England may not officially determine NYCFC’s season, but they could determine its direction. Two wins would restore belief and reopen the conversation about a serious postseason run. Two more disappointing results could transform a temporary slump into a genuine crisis. For Pascal Jansen and his players, the moment to respond has arrived.
