Callens debuts in Spain but leaves a void in New York

Alex Callens made his debut for Girona last week. First appearance for the former New York City FC defender who came on as a second-half substitute. For the record, Girona CF was defeated by Cadiz.

Thus Callens began his adventure in Europe. New York City FC has yet to start its season but Callens' farewell has not been covered by the club. The Peruvian has been one of the best defenders in the last few years of MLS. For NYCFC his departure is a serious loss, it is difficult to replace a player like him, to find such a strong and well-prepared defender, and even worse not to have replaced him at all.

Other than Maxi Moralez, New York City FC hasn't (for now) found a quality replacement in defense. The team finds itself without a key player in defense and the absence of Callens could be felt.

It is not about experience, but only a technical question.  Callens was one of the team's veterans, a player who made a difference on the pitch, a player who was often decisive for the Pigeons.

We have to admit that finding a replacement worthy of him could have been complicated, but we expected something more. And instead, the empty box left by Callens will remain empty.
