New York City FC kick off their demanding May schedule with a high-stakes test this Sunday at Citi Field, hosting Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati.

Cincinnati, led by head coach Pat Noonan, have made a powerful start to the 2025 season. Meanwhile, NYCFC enter the clash with confidence, fresh off a positive result against Toronto FC, and looking to build momentum during a packed month of fixtures.

Head coach Pascal Jansen emphasized that maintaining tactical discipline — especially in midfield — will be key in containing Cincinnati’s most dangerous threats.

“It’s about focusing on our own qualities and principles, especially when we’re in possession,” Jansen said.
“Out of possession, we need discipline. We’ve analyzed Cincinnati closely, and we know they have talented players—Evander being one of them.”

Evander, the Brazilian playmaker, has been instrumental in Cincinnati’s attacking setup, and Jansen knows neutralizing his impact could shape the outcome of the match.

“Understanding his tendencies from previous matches helps us prepare,” Jansen added.
“It’s especially important during transitions or when we're defending without the ball.”

To meet the challenge, Jansen will rely heavily on the balance and awareness of his midfield core, including Maxi Moralez, Keaton Parks, and rising talent Johnny Shore.

“Creating that discipline across our midfield is always a challenge, but so far, they’re doing a good job.”

With the month just beginning and expectations rising, Sunday’s matchup could be a tone-setter for NYCFC’s campaign — and a test of both structure and spirit.
