New York City FC bounced back from a tough midweek loss to the New England Revolution with a gritty 2-0 road win over Real Salt Lake, powered by a stunning Nico Fernández Mercau free-kick routine and a clinical second-half finish from Luighi.

Freese Stands Tall Early as RSL Dominate Possession

Head coach Pascal Jansen shook up his XI with five changes ahead of the trip to Utah, and it was the home side who came flying out of the gates. Saba Lobjanidze had an early shot blocked by Agustín Ojeda before NYCFC settled in, with Nico Fernández Mercau firing narrowly wide in the 14th minute.

Real Salt Lake kept the pressure on and nearly broke through in the 16th minute, but goalkeeper Matt Freese produced a stunning double save — first denying Luca Moisa's low, skidding shot, then reacting instantly to smother Lobjanidze's rebound attempt from close range.

The hosts continued to push, with Juan José Arias heading over the bar and Jonny Shore having a chance snuffed out by Noel Caliskan. Freese was called into action again in the 20th minute, saving from Morgan Guilavogui before making another key stop against Lobjanidze. That stop proved pivotal, as New York City FC extended their advantage soon after. Gray launched a rapid transition, releasing Ojeda into space on the right flank. The winger surged forward before squaring the ball across the box for Luighi, who timed his run perfectly to slot home a low finish past Cabral.

Luighi was withdrawn in the 72nd minute for Bénie Traoré, while Ojeda nearly made it 3-0 shortly after, nutmegging a defender and racing clear before his cutback was cleared for a corner. Jansen then made a double substitution, introducing Aiden O'Neill and Kevin O'Toole in place of Nico Cavallo and Shore.

Real Salt Lake continued to search for a route back into the match, coming closest on a corner kick when Aiden Hezarkhani's powerful header was denied by yet another Freese save, with O'Toole mopping up the danger. In a heartwarming moment late in the match, Alonso Martínez made his long-awaited return from injury, replacing Hannes Wolf up front.
