NYCFC vs Red Bulls: Hall Goal Decides Hudson River Derby

New York City FC suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Red Bull New York in the Hudson River Derby, with Julian Hall’s second-half goal settling Friday night’s meeting in the Bronx.

Pascal Jansen’s side created opportunities throughout the match but could not find a way past Ethan Horvath. A costly defensive mistake ultimately separated the teams, handing the visitors victory after the previous derby had finished 1-1.

Jansen made one change from the lineup that beat Real Salt Lake 2-0, bringing Aiden O’Neill into midfield for Jonny Shore.

NYCFC Create Openings but Hall Punishes Defensive Error

NYCFC began with attacking intent, as Nico Fernández Mercau fired wide before O’Neill had an attempt blocked. Andrés Perea then forced Horvath into a save after combining with Fernández Mercau.

The visitors offered a warning before halftime, with Tayvon Gray helping clear the danger following a back-post opportunity for Mohamed Sofo.

Both teams threatened immediately after the restart. Hall missed from close range for the Red Bulls, while Horvath denied Hannes Wolf at the other end.

NYCFC then squandered a particularly promising opening when Luighi side-footed wide following a flowing move involving Fernández Mercau and Perea.

Hall delivered the decisive blow in the 57th minute. The forward intercepted an underhit James Sands back pass, rounded Matt Freese and finished into an unguarded net.

Horvath Holds Firm Against Late NYCFC Pressure

Jansen introduced Alonso Martínez and Bénie Traoré shortly after the hour, and the substitutes helped increase the urgency of NYCFC’s attack.

Martínez appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty following contact with Sofo, while Traoré fired over after exchanging passes with the Costa Rican forward.

The hosts continued searching for an equalizer. Thiago Martins tested Horvath with a powerful header, but the goalkeeper tipped it over. Martínez subsequently poked another opportunity wide.

NYCFC pushed into stoppage time, with Horvath saving from Traoré before Gray headed off target and Perea had an effort blocked.

The Red Bulls also threatened on the counterattack, but no further goal arrived. For NYCFC, the derby ended with a familiar distinction between creating opportunities and converting them: sustained pressure produced no reward, while one defensive error proved decisive.
