New York City FC delivered a statement performance on Friday night, defeating Charlotte FC 3–1 at Bank of America Stadium to clinch their Best-of-3 series (2–1) and move on to the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs.
Two goals from Nico Fernández and one from Alonso Martínez powered the visitors past a resilient Charlotte side that had forced a decisive Game 3 with a narrow penalty shootout win in the previous encounter.
Head coach Pascal Jansen made just one adjustment to his starting XI, introducing Hannes Wolf in place of Raúl Gustavo, a move that proved instrumental as the Austrian winger provided the assist for the clinching goal in stoppage time.
A First-Half Stalemate Broken by Nico Fernández’s Brilliance
Charlotte began aggressively, with Wilfried Zaha nearly giving the hosts the lead in the 10th minute, only to be denied by a superb block from Thiago Martins. The early minutes saw New York City under pressure, but the backline stood firm through a series of corners and aerial threats.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime, and it was a moment of individual brilliance from Nico Fernández.
Capitalizing on a failed Charlotte corner, Fernández picked up the loose ball inside his own half, burst past Tim Ream, and sprinted 60 yards before firing an unstoppable strike high into the net from a tight angle.
That stunning solo effort gave New York City FC a 1–0 lead at the interval and shifted the game’s momentum firmly in their favor.
Martínez Doubles the Lead Before Charlotte’s Late Push
The visitors struck again early in the second half. After a Charlotte set piece was cleared, Maxi Moralez released Alonso Martínez with a perfect through ball. The Costa Rican forward outpaced Nathan Byrne before calmly slotting the ball under Kristijan Kahlina to make it 2–0.
As Charlotte pushed forward desperately, the match grew more physical, with both teams committing tactical fouls to disrupt rhythm.
New York City suffered a setback in the 75th minute when Andrés Perea was forced off injured, replaced by Raúl Gustavo. Shortly after, Moralez again combined with Wolf to create a near-chance for Martínez, but a late tackle denied the striker his second goal.
Charlotte finally broke through in the 81st minute as Idan Toklomati reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, reducing the deficit to 2–1 and setting up a tense finish.
Fernández Seals It: A Dinked Finish to Send NYCFC Through
In the dying minutes, with 12 minutes of stoppage time added, Charlotte poured forward—but New York City FC held their defensive line and struck on the counter.
A long pass from Agustín Ojeda released Hannes Wolf, who drew in defenders before laying off for Nico Fernández. The Argentine coolly chipped the onrushing Kahlina from a near-impossible angle to make it 3–1, securing both his brace and NYCFC’s progression to the semifinals.
Fernández’s late substitution for Strahinja Tanasijević drew a standing ovation from teammates and fans alike—his performance a masterclass in composure and finishing.

With the victory, New York City FC advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, where they will face the winner of the Philadelphia Union vs. Atlanta United series.
