The New York Knicks went toe-to-toe with the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder for most of the night, showing resilience and competitiveness against one of the NBA’s most complete teams. But when it mattered most, the game slipped away.
In a matchup played on the birthday of franchise legend Walt Frazier, New York delivered a strong effort for three quarters—only to unravel in the final stretch as Oklahoma City pulled away for a 111-100 victory.
Three quarters of hope, one quarter of disaster
Facing a Thunder team that entered the game with the best record in the league and elite numbers on both ends of the floor, the Knicks knew the challenge ahead. Yet, through the first three quarters, they rose to the occasion.
The game remained competitive, with New York matching Oklahoma City’s intensity and executing well enough to stay within striking distance. There were signs of balance, defensive effort, and offensive rhythm that suggested an upset was within reach.
However, the fourth quarter told a completely different story. The Thunder shifted gears, increasing their defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, quickly creating separation. What had been a tight contest turned into a double-digit deficit in a matter of minutes.
Missed shots and turnovers doom New York
Beyond the momentum swing, the numbers reveal why the Knicks struggled to close the game. Inefficiency on offense played a major role, with the team missing a high volume of shots that prevented them from capitalizing on key moments.
Turnovers also proved costly. Giving the ball away 18 times against a team as dynamic as the Thunder allowed Oklahoma City to generate easy points and control the pace of the game.
Perhaps most telling was the disparity at the free-throw line. The Thunder nearly doubled the Knicks in attempts, creating a scoring cushion that New York could not overcome. In tightly contested games, those margins often make the difference.
In the end, the Knicks showed they can compete with the league’s best—but also highlighted the areas that must improve. With the postseason approaching, consistency, discipline, and execution will be critical.
Because against elite teams, three good quarters simply aren’t enough.
