New York City FC’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, as Inter Miami CF left Yankee Stadium with a thrilling 3-2 victory. It was a contest full of momentum swings, moments of real quality, and just enough chaos to underline why both teams are expected to be major players in the Eastern Conference race.
For long stretches, NYCFC showed they were capable of matching one of the league’s biggest names. They responded well after falling behind early, found attacking solutions through clever movement and technical quality, and briefly looked set to extend their strong start to the campaign. In the end, however, the difference came down to fine margins and the ability of Inter Miami’s stars to punish every lapse.
NYCFC show quality but defensive lapses prove costly
The game could hardly have started in a worse way for the home side. Inter Miami struck with their first meaningful attack, capitalizing on a set-piece situation that was not fully cleared and allowing Gonzalo Lujan to fire home from close range. It was an early blow that forced NYCFC to chase the game almost immediately.
To their credit, Pascal Jansen’s side did not lose structure or confidence. As the half progressed, New York settled into the contest and began to impose itself with greater authority. The equalizer arrived through Nicolás Fernández Mercau, whose beautifully struck free kick crashed in off the underside of the bar. It was the kind of goal that changed the mood inside the stadium and gave the hosts fresh momentum.
That momentum carried into the second half. After a well-constructed move that started deep and flowed quickly through midfield, Agustín Ojeda finished calmly to put NYCFC in front. At that stage, the home side looked composed and dangerous, with the movement of Maxi Moralez and the directness of Ojeda causing real problems.
Yet that promising spell also highlighted the frustration of the afternoon: every time NYCFC seemed to seize control, Inter Miami found a response. New York’s attacking play was good enough to win the match, but their inability to protect key moments ultimately proved decisive.
Messi’s influence turns a thriller in Miami’s favor
Even when he was not scoring, Lionel Messi remained central to everything Inter Miami did well. He tested Matt Freese repeatedly in the first half, struck the woodwork more than once, and constantly looked capable of changing the game with a single touch.
That influence became decisive after Ojeda’s goal. With NYCFC briefly on top, Messi restored parity through a free kick that took a deflection and wrong-footed Freese. It was an unfortunate moment for the hosts, but it also felt like a reminder that against players of that caliber, even a slight break can shift the entire contest.
The winning goal arrived later through Micael, who rose at the back post to convert from a wide delivery and complete Miami’s comeback. From there, NYCFC pushed hard for an equalizer and nearly found it, especially through late efforts from Talles Magno and Aiden O’Neill, but Inter Miami held firm.
For New York City FC, this was a painful result, but not one without positives. They competed toe-to-toe with a high-level opponent, created enough to take something from the game, and showed once again that they can trouble top teams. At the same time, this defeat exposed the small defensive errors and concentration lapses that can make the difference in elite MLS matchups.
The unbeaten run may be over, but the performance also showed that NYCFC remain firmly in the conversation. Against a team packed with talent and guided by Messi’s brilliance, they were in the match until the final moments. That will offer encouragement, even if the result leaves a lingering sense of what might have been.
