Few MLS teams have had to navigate as many injury setbacks as New York City FC in 2026. Despite remaining firmly in the playoff race and returning strongly after the World Cup break, the Boys in Blue have rarely been able to field their strongest lineup for an extended period.
Pascal Jansen has repeatedly been forced to adapt, reshuffling his squad while maintaining the club's identity. That resilience has kept NYCFC competitive, but there is little doubt that the return of several important players could dramatically raise the team's ceiling during the decisive months of the season.
With the Leagues Cup and MLS fixtures arriving almost simultaneously, squad depth may become the biggest factor in determining how far NYCFC can go.
Who Is Still Missing for NYCFC?
The injury list has affected nearly every area of the field.
At different stages of the season, Pascal Jansen has been without experienced leaders, creative midfielders, defenders and attacking options, limiting both tactical flexibility and squad rotation.
The coaching staff has carefully managed player workloads, avoiding unnecessary risks during recovery. While some players are approaching full fitness, others continue individualized rehabilitation programs before being cleared for competitive action.
The positive news for NYCFC is that several key figures are expected to return throughout August, potentially giving Jansen his deepest squad of the season just as both the Leagues Cup knockout rounds and the MLS playoff race begin to intensify.
Even players who initially return from the bench could make a major difference by allowing the coaching staff to rotate the starting lineup during an extremely demanding schedule.
Why the Return of Key Players Could Change Everything
Healthy teams often separate themselves from the competition during the final months of the MLS season, and NYCFC hopes to benefit from exactly that scenario.
The expected return of experienced players would strengthen every department of the team. Defensively, additional options would reduce fatigue and improve stability. In midfield, increased depth would allow Jansen to maintain his high-intensity pressing system without overworking his regular starters.
The attacking unit could benefit even more. Fresh legs and greater competition for places would create new tactical possibilities while helping NYCFC become more efficient in front of goal—an area where valuable points have occasionally slipped away this season.
Perhaps most importantly, a healthier squad would give Jansen the flexibility to approach each competition differently. Instead of being forced to prioritize one tournament over another because of limited numbers, NYCFC could realistically compete on multiple fronts.
The next few weeks may ultimately define the club's ambitions for 2026. If injured players return on schedule and quickly regain match fitness, the Boys in Blue could enter the final stretch of the campaign stronger than at any previous point this season.
For a team already showing encouraging form despite significant absences, that prospect should excite every NYCFC supporter. The talent has always been there. Now, the challenge is finally getting everyone back on the field together at the moment it matters most.
