NYCFC midfielder Gudmundur Thórarinsson can’t be on the pitch right now to entertain fans, so he’s  turning to a different talent this week — his voice.

A native of Iceland, Thórarinsson plays guitar and makes music when he’s not playing soccer. He wrote and released a song on Thursday he hopes will lift soccer fans’ spirits during the coronavirus pandemic that has had an especially brutal impact on the New York region.

“We are obviously all going through these tough times at the moment,” Thórarinsson said. “This has been very difficult but we need to stay strong and stay safe. … Hopefully we will all see each other soon at the stadium.”

Thórarinsson, who joined NYCFC this year, first flexed his off-the-field talent during an initiation tradition for new club players in March. When he was asked to stand on a chair and sing a song during a preseason team meal, the midfielder belted out a rendition of “So Sick” by Ne-Yo.
