James Sands left New York City FC in January 2022. The midfielder had moved to Glasgow Rangers and with coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst he managed to carve out his space by also offering good performances. Everything changed after the coaching change. With the arrival of Nicolas Raskin, Sands no longer found many matches. According to some rumors, Sands could be loaned to New York City FC.

Nick Cushing spoke in the pre-season about NYCFC's possible interest in Sands but without committing himself: "I think that for us there are many negotiations underway between our entire team. Recruiting is currently one of our great goals. But I don't want to comment on the individual situations".

Cushing therefore did not want to add anything else regarding the possible return of Sands to New York. Yet he is certain that the player is appreciated by the club and by the coach himself. If things don't change at the Rangers then Sands would be very ready to return to New York City FC.
