You would have been forgiven for worrying about New York City FC under Domenec Torrent at the start of the season. In 2018, they limped into playoffs because of the excellent start they made under Patrick Vieira, fell out of them in comprehensive fashion against Atlanta United, and then proceeded to win none of their first six matches.

However, things have quickly changed. They are now unbeaten in their last ten matches, have beaten good teams like D.C. United, the Galaxy and Montreal, and are now sitting in sixth place with the potential to actually move top of the East should they win their games in hand over the teams currently above them — they have the third-best points-per-game record.

Moreover, they are growing as the season is progressing. The players are better understanding Torrent’s system, Torrent is better adapting to the players he has, this good run initially stemming from his decision to switch to a back three, and their performances are improving with each week, this being their most fluent of the season by some distance.

New York City FC are for real and they might just upset the apple cart atop the Eastern Conference
