When Jalen Brunson signed a team-friendly contract extension in 2024, many around the NBA questioned whether he had made the right financial decision. Among them was former Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony, who admitted he would never have left that much money on the table.
At the time, it was a fair opinion. Most players would choose the largest contract available, especially when the difference exceeds $100 million.
Two years later, however, the debate looks very different.
Brunson isn’t simply the face of the New York Knicks—he is an NBA champion and Finals MVP, the player who led the franchise to its first title in 53 years.
Brunson Chose Championships Over Maximum Money
By accepting a four-year extension worth $156.5 million instead of waiting for a significantly larger payday, Brunson gave New York something every contender desperately needs: financial flexibility.
That flexibility became one of the foundations of the Knicks’ championship roster.
It allowed the front office to continue investing around its franchise point guard, keeping together a core that featured Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Rather than chasing the biggest possible salary, Brunson prioritized the opportunity to compete for championships every season.
His approach wasn’t about sacrificing money for praise. It was about trusting the organization to use those savings wisely.
The Knicks rewarded that trust.
Why the Knicks’ Gamble Paid Off Perfectly
The 2026 championship doesn’t prove that every superstar should accept less than the maximum salary. Every situation is different, and Carmelo Anthony’s perspective remains understandable from a player’s standpoint.
What Brunson demonstrated is that, under the right circumstances, investing in the team’s future can produce the ultimate reward.
New York didn’t win the championship solely because Brunson accepted a smaller contract. The title was earned through elite roster construction, outstanding coaching, and brilliant postseason performances.
But his decision gave the front office the flexibility to make many of those moves possible.
Brunson ultimately delivered the perfect ending to his gamble, scoring 45 points in the title-clinching Game 5 and earning Finals MVP honors.
Championship banners don’t erase financial debates, but they certainly change how history remembers them.
Today, Brunson’s contract is no longer viewed as a sacrifice. It’s remembered as one of the smartest decisions in modern Knicks history—a move that helped transform a talented team into NBA champions.
For New York fans, the conversation has become remarkably simple.
Carmelo Anthony defended maximizing every dollar.
Jalen Brunson chose a different path.
Only one of those choices ended with a championship parade through Manhattan.
