Lionel Messi is reportedly set to extend his stay at Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar is nearing an agreement on a new multi-year deal with the MLS side that could keep him in Florida until 2028, the year he turns 41.

While the agreement is not yet finalized, only minor contract details remain to be sorted out.

Aiming for a Historic Sixth World Cup Appearance

Messi’s primary motivation is clear: he wants to remain competitive ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in North America. If selected, the former Ballon d’Or winner would become the first player in history to participate in six World Cups. Following that milestone, Messi will assess whether to continue playing or retire from professional football.

Future Beyond the Pitch Already Taking Shape

The proposed contract is expected to run for at least three seasons, but with built-in flexibility. Should Messi choose to retire early, he could transition into a front-office role within the club, where he is already a shareholder. His bond with Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham, extends well beyond his on-field contributions.

Moreover, a return to FC Barcelona in a non-playing capacity remains a possibility. The Catalan club is reportedly open to welcoming Messi back for a future executive position once he ends his playing career.
