Houston Dynamo select Tommy McNamara in MLS Re-Entry Draft

The Houston Dynamo selected New York City FC midfielder Tommy McNamara in the second stage of the MLS Re-Entry draft on Thursday.

The West Nyack, N.Y., native spent four years with the Cityzens after premiering in Major League Soccer with Chivas USA during the 2014 season. McNamara, a fan favorite, was not part of NYCFC’s plans for next season, and the club declined the option on his contract at the conclusion of the 2018 season. The Dynamo will now have exclusive rights, per the draft, to negotiate a contract with McNamara for 2019.

McNamara has made 92 career appearances during MLS regular-season play, starting 72 matches. In his career, he’s scored 14 goals and added 14 assists. His most productive year to date was in 2016, when he contributed five goals and nine assists to help NYCFC to the first of three straight playoff seasons.

McNamara joined MLS as the 20th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He started his collegiate career at Brown University, playing there before transferring to Clemson to obtain his master’s degree. In his only season at Clemson, he led the squad with seven goals and had eight assists, earning first-team All-ACC and NSCAA All-South honors.

Should McNamara and the Dynamo agree on a contract, he could see MLS action again as soon as March 2, the just-announced home opener date bringing Real Salt Lake to Houston.
