It was always going to be an uphill battle for New York City FC. Atlanta United are arguably the best team in MLS, formidable in the raucous confines of the Mercedes Benz Stadium, and boast a one-goal lead that allows them to sit deep, soak up the pressure and play on the counter-attack.

Nevertheless, this was a disappointing double-legged performance by NYCFC. Ever since Patrick Vieira departed midway through the year, this team, under the direction of Domenec Torrent, has lacked a clear and defined identity. They do not have a particular style, they have mastered no certain characteristics or tactical elements. They just rely on their individual talent.

Throughout this series, Atlanta held New York at arm’s length. They were never really troubled, with the only goal conceded coming from a set-piece. New York never got close to Atlanta, and the aggregate scoreline is illustrative of that.

Whether Torrent stays next season, along with players like David Villa, remains to be seen. But this was a team that limped into the playoffs with little hope. They are now limping out of it with no hope whatsoever.
