Dome Torrent to leave NYCFC head coaching post this winter

Domenec Torrent is ready to call time on his New York City FC experience, according to a new ESPN report from two Barcelona-based journalists.

Citing “various sources” with knowledge of the situation, the outlet reported on Tuesday that Torrent, 57, will step down as NYCFC head coach in the days to come, after he cast doubt on his own future in his remarks following the Cityzens’ upset loss to Toronto FC in the MLS Eastern Conference Semifinals last month.

Apparently the Catalan coach had not yet decided to depart at that moment, but has subsequently come to the conclusion that he’s ready to move on despite having one year remaining on his current contract.

A longtime assistant to Pep Guardiola at FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, Torrent took over NYCFC in midseason last year after Patrick Vieira’s departure for French club OGC Nice. After an uneven start, Torrent found his footing this season, leading the blue half of New York to their best regular season ever, finishing first in the East standings.

The report adds that Torrent has “drawn interest from a number of other MLS clubs and could choose to remain in North America” for his next gig, though he is also said to have options in the Middle East.
