The MLS outfit announced the appointment of the 44-year-old on their official website nycfc.com, having left Norwegian side Valerenga to take up his new post on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Deila had two seasons in charge of Celtic from 2014 to 2016, winning the Premiership in both of his campaigns at Parkhead as well as the Scottish League Cup in 2015.

He won 76 of his 118 matches in charge of the Hoops for a 64.4% win rate and claimed 2.12 points per game during his time in Glasgow.

However, Celtic suffered some sobering European defeats during Deila’s tenure, with Champions League play-off exits to Maribor and Malmo and a bottom-placed finish in the 2015/16 Europa League group stage. His Hoops team also lost out to Rangers in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Despite those disappointments, many Celtic fans on Twitter have wished the Norwegian well in his new job with New York City FC. Here are some of the responses from the Hoops faithful, with one fan hoping Deila has a reunion with his former club in the next few months:
